1. System Overview
The Network Video Recorder (NVR) is the central component responsible for:
-
Receiving video streams from the IP cameras
-
Displaying live camera feeds
-
Recording and storing surveillance footage
-
Searching and playing back recorded video
-
Exporting recordings for investigation
-
Monitoring camera, network and storage status
-
Managing users and access permissions
-
Generating system and exception logs
The DS-7608NXI-K2/8P supports up to eight IP camera channels with integrated PoE ports and two internal SATA hard-drive connections.
The DS-7604NXI-K1/4P supports up to four IP camera channels with integrated PoE ports and one internal SATA hard-drive connection.
2. Accessing the NVR
The NVR can normally be accessed using:
-
A monitor and mouse connected directly to the NVR
-
A web browser from an authorized computer on the same network
-
Hikvision client software, when configured by the system administrator
Local access
-
Switch on the monitor connected to the NVR.
-
Right-click anywhere on the live-view screen.
-
Select the required menu.
-
Enter the authorized username and password when requested.
Web access
-
Connect the computer to the authorized CCTV or corporate network.
-
Open a supported web browser.
-
Enter the NVR IP address.
-
Sign in using the assigned account.
-
Install or allow the required Hikvision web component if requested.
The exact menu names may vary slightly depending on the installed firmware version.
Security requirements
-
Do not share administrator credentials.
-
Do not write passwords on or near the NVR.
-
Use individual accounts where possible.
-
Change temporary passwords after initial access.
-
Do not connect the NVR directly to the public internet without an approved security configuration.
-
Report repeated failed login attempts to the IT administrator.
3. Checking Live Camera View
The live-view screen should display all cameras assigned to the NVR.
Procedure
-
Open Live View.
-
Select the required screen layout.
-
Double-click a camera to display it in full-screen mode.
-
Double-click again to return to the multi-camera layout.
-
Confirm that the displayed date and time are correct.
-
Confirm that the image is clear and stable.
Normal camera status
A correctly operating camera should show:
-
Continuous live video
-
Correct camera name
-
Correct date and time
-
Stable image without interruption
-
Proper day or night image mode
-
No offline or network error message
If a camera is offline
Check the following:
-
Confirm that the network cable is securely connected.
-
Check whether the corresponding NVR PoE port has link activity.
-
Open the camera management page and review the camera status.
-
Confirm that the camera IP address does not conflict with another device.
-
Check whether the camera password saved in the NVR is correct.
-
Test the network cable if the camera remains offline.
-
Restart only the affected camera or PoE port where possible.
Avoid restarting the complete NVR unless necessary, as this temporarily interrupts recording for all connected cameras.
4. Confirming Recording Status
Live video does not automatically confirm that footage is being recorded. Recording status must be checked separately.
Procedure
-
Open Configuration or Settings.
-
Go to Record or Storage Schedule.
-
Select the required camera.
-
Confirm that the recording schedule is enabled.
-
Confirm that the schedule covers the required days and hours.
-
Check the recording indicator on the live-view screen.
-
Perform a short playback test.
Recording modes
The NVR may be configured for:
-
Continuous recording
-
Motion-based recording
-
Event-based recording
-
A combination of continuous and event recording
The actual retention period depends on:
-
Hard-drive capacity
-
Number of cameras
-
Camera resolution
-
Frame rate
-
Video bitrate
-
H.265 or H.265+ compression
-
Continuous or event-based recording
-
Recorded scene activity
When the storage becomes full, the system is normally configured to overwrite the oldest footage automatically.
5. Searching and Playing Back Recordings
Procedure
-
Open Playback.
-
Select the required camera or cameras.
-
Select the required date from the calendar.
-
Choose the start and end time.
-
Select the recording type if the option is available.
-
Click Search or Play.
-
Use the timeline to move to the required time.
-
Use the zoom controls for more accurate time selection.
Playback controls
Common controls include:
-
Play
-
Pause
-
Stop
-
Fast forward
-
Slow playback
-
Single-frame playback
-
Digital zoom
-
Clip or download
-
Synchronous multi-camera playback
For incident investigation, verify that the NVR time is correct before exporting the recording.
6. Exporting Video Evidence
Use a trusted USB storage device with sufficient available capacity.
Procedure
-
Insert the USB device into the NVR.
-
Open Playback or File Management.
-
Select the relevant camera.
-
Select the required date and time range.
-
Mark the beginning and end of the required clip.
-
Select Export, Download or Backup.
-
Choose the connected USB device.
-
Export the recording in its original format where possible.
-
Export the video player component if offered by the system.
-
Wait for the export process to complete before removing the USB device.
-
Test the exported file on an authorized computer.
Evidence-handling recommendation
Record the following information whenever footage is exported:
-
Site name
-
Camera name
-
Incident date and time
-
Export date
-
Exported by
-
File name
-
USB or evidence reference
-
Person receiving the recording
Do not edit, rename or convert the original exported file if it may be required as formal evidence. Create a working copy instead.
7. Checking Hard-Drive Health
The hard drives store all recorded footage. Their status should be checked regularly.
Procedure
-
Open Configuration.
-
Go to Storage and then HDD or Storage Management.
-
Confirm that every installed hard drive is detected.
-
Confirm that the status is shown as Normal.
-
Check the total, used and available capacity.
-
Review the S.M.A.R.T. status if available.
-
Investigate any storage exception immediately.
Common HDD statuses
| Status | Meaning | Required action |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Drive is detected and operating | No action required |
| Uninitialized | Drive is detected but not prepared for recording | Contact the administrator before initialization |
| Abnormal | Drive error or possible failure | Report to ATCC technical support |
| Not Detected | NVR cannot identify the drive | Check power, SATA connection and drive condition |
| Read-Only | Recording may not be possible | Check drive condition and system configuration |
| Full | Storage has reached capacity | Confirm overwrite settings |
Initializing or formatting a hard drive permanently deletes its recorded footage. This action must only be performed by an authorized administrator after confirming that no required evidence will be lost.
8. Checking NVR Logs
System logs help identify camera disconnections, login activity, storage errors and configuration changes.
Procedure
-
Open Maintenance.
-
Select Log Information or Log Search.
-
Choose the required date and time range.
-
Select the event category.
-
Run the search.
-
Export the results if escalation is required.
Useful log categories may include:
-
Camera offline
-
Network disconnected
-
HDD error
-
Recording exception
-
User login or logout
-
Configuration changes
-
Illegal login attempts
-
System restart
-
Video loss
9. Recommended Daily Health Check
The authorized site representative should verify:
-
All expected cameras are online
-
Live video is available from every camera
-
Camera date and time are correct
-
Recording indicators are active
-
No HDD or storage warning is displayed
-
No network or video-loss warning is displayed
-
Camera views have not been physically blocked or moved
Any problem should be recorded with the site name, camera name, time observed and a screenshot or photograph where possible.
